Mr David Darke David is a semi retired farmer, living in the South Hams. He farms in partnership with his wife, son and daughter in law. Until recently he was farming organically mainly dairy cows with some sheep. The sheep are exhibited quite successfully at the Agricultural shows in David has been past President of Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club, David has supported the team with the establishment of Bowel Cancer West since its inception, and was pivotal with the commencement of early fund raising activities. We are delighted to have David Darke as our Patron who is committed to the development and success of Bowel Cancer West. |

Mark Coleman Colorectal Consultant Derriford Hospital, Plymouth mcoleman1@nhs.net Mark Coleman has been a Consultant Surgeon at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth since 2001. He has been the National Lead Clinician of the Lapco National Training Programme in laparoscopic colorectal surgery since September 2008 (www.lapco.nhs.uk). He was the Colorectal National Advisor to the Department of Health (DH) Enhanced Recovery Partnership Programme from January 2009 until June 2010 and has recently been appointed a National Advisor to the DH National Training Programme for low rectal cancer (LoReC). He is the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Skills Tutor for Plymouth, Intercollegiate Basic Surgical Skills Course Convenor, and RCS Core Skills in Laparoscopic Surgery Course Convenor. He is RCS (England) Regional Speciality Professional Advisor for GI Surgery for South West England. He is a member of the Peninsula School of Surgery Committee. He was a medical undergraduate in Leicester, a junior anatomy lecturer at the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and a SHO in various hospitals in the south east. He then spent a short period as a surgical registrar at the world famous Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa in 1993-4, before becoming a surgical registrar on the Wessex ‘Flyer’ rotation from 1995-2001. His research MD in Southampton was on the subject of ‘DNA instability in colorectal cancer’.
He also spent a year as a Fellow in the prestigious laparoscopic surgery unit in Brisbane, Australia with George Fielding, Les Nathanson and Nick O’Rourke. As a registrar in Basingstoke he worked for Professor Bill Heald, Brendan Moran and Merv Rees.
Through both his registrar and consultant posts he has developed an interest and reputation in surgical skills training both regionally and nationally. He now leads the world’s largest surgical skills training programme for consultants and has lectured extensively on the delivery of surgical skills training.
His clinical interests include laparoscopic colorectal surgery, hernia repair, ‘sportsman’s groin, splenectomy and cholecystectomy. He is part of a regional centre for the laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis. He is currently pioneering single port laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
In 2010 he launched the charity ‘Bowel Cancer West’ to support research, publicity and training. He lives on the rain soaked edge of Dartmoor with his wife, Jilly, son James and a variety of hairy and feathered additional family members.

Gary Minto Gary Minto is an itinerant Scotsman, raised in South Africa and trained as anaesthetist in the UK and Australia. He is interested in interventions to enhance recovery after major colorectal and joint replacement surgery in preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise (CPX) testing to assess the risk to patients from major surgery, and in physiological monitoring and fluid management during operations. Outside of work he enjoys most sports, but hasn’t yet unearthed one that he is especially good at.

Andrew Latchford Consultant Derriford Hospital, Plymouth andrew.latchford@nhs.net Andrew is part of the Gastroenterology Department at Derriford with a total of 6 Consultants who provide a comprehensive range of services to treat disorders of the digestive track including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, swelling, Crohns disease and colitis. All consultants in the team are actively involved in the endoscopy department which offers a complete diagnostic and advanced endoscopic service including ERCP, video capsule endoscopy and oesophageal physiological studies. Andrew is delighted to be involved with Bowel Cancer West, and looks forward to being part of the team and research projects. He has a key interest in genetics, and will be actively involved in the Bowel Cancer patient register initiative when the funding has been secured for this project. |

Jonathan Mills Jonathan is the Managing Director of a Public Relations and marketing company (formedia.co.uk) supporting Bowel Cancer West with graphic design, web development and PR. He has a developed a number of niche market projects including complex training web sites for the NHS, medical organisations as well as many marketing and web based activities supporting the private medical and healthcare sectors. |

Laura Langsford Programme Manager, Lapco Derriford, Plymouth laura.langsford@nhs.net Laura is the National Programme Manager for the training programme in laparoscopic colorectal surgery which is a world leading training programme for Consultants. It has over 200 Consultants involved in receiving or delivering training which accounts for over one third of all Colorectal Consultants in Laura was previously a Commercial Property Chartered Surveyor for 15 years, practicing in Outside of work, Laura enjoys all sports and ran the Duchy Marathon for Bowel Cancer West in March 2010, and participates in playing for Tavistock Hockey Club come rain or shine throughout the year. Laura is delighted to be part of the development of Bowel Cancer West, and looks forward to establishing the charity for its long term success. |
